The London Transport Museum in Covent Garden tells the story of how the world's first great metropolis kept moving, from horse-drawn omnibuses to the red double-decker and the Tube. Housed in a handsome former flower-market hall, it is one of the city's most family-friendly museums and a treasure trove of design history.

Why visit

London's transport is a design icon in its own right, from the roundel to Harry Beck's Tube map, and this is where that story is told. Children can climb aboard historic vehicles while adults will appreciate the posters, signage and engineering behind a network that shaped the modern city.

What to see

The collection includes restored buses, trams and Tube carriages spanning two centuries, alongside one of the finest poster collections anywhere. The shop is a destination in itself for moquette-patterned souvenirs and reproduction prints.

Visiting tips

A standard ticket lasts a full year, so you can return. It sits in the corner of the Covent Garden piazza, minutes from the Royal Opera House. For more, see our museums guide.
