The Horniman Museum and Gardens in Forest Hill is one of London's most lovable institutions, the legacy of a Victorian tea trader who filled his home with curiosities from around the world. Free to enter and set in 16 acres of hilltop gardens with views back to the city, it pairs natural history, world cultures and one of the great musical-instrument collections.

Why visit

It has personality. The famously overstuffed walrus, the aquarium, the butterfly house and the sweeping gardens make it a brilliant family day out, while the anthropology and music galleries reward curious adults. The hilltop setting and city views are a bonus few central museums can offer.

What to see

Highlights include the natural history gallery and its celebrated walrus, an aquarium, a hands-on music gallery, and gardens with a bandstand, animal walk and butterfly house. The displays are warm and idiosyncratic rather than slick.

Visiting tips

The museum and gardens are free, though the aquarium and butterfly house are ticketed. Forest Hill station (London Overground) is a short walk uphill. It makes a fine pairing with nearby Dulwich.
