Yes, London is a safe city for visitors. Violent crime is rare in the central, tourist areas, and the main thing to be aware of is opportunistic pickpocketing and phone-snatching in crowded spots. With normal big-city sense, you are very unlikely to run into trouble.
How safe is London really
London is one of the world's most visited cities and the areas you will spend time in, the West End, South Bank, Kensington, the City, are busy and well-policed day and night. Most visits are completely trouble-free.
Pickpockets and phone theft
The real risk is theft, not violence. Phone-snatching by moped and pickpocketing happen on Oxford Street, in markets and on the Tube. Keep your phone away from the kerb, your bag zipped and in front of you, and stay aware in crowds.
At night and which areas

Dial 999 (or 112) for police, ambulance or fire. For non-urgent police matters call 101. Save your accommodation address and keep a copy of your passport.
