How speakeasies work
Entrances are deliberately disguised, sometimes requiring a password, a phone booth or a hidden buzzer. Inside, expect a small, atmospheric space, table service and a serious cocktail list. Because they are small, the best ones get full fast.
Where to find them
Soho, Shoreditch and the West End hold the densest cluster of hidden bars, from basement dens to bars disguised behind everyday shopfronts. Long-running names have become institutions, while new ones open regularly, so it pays to check current listings.
Booking and etiquette
Many speakeasies take reservations, which is the safest way in at peak times; others are walk-in only and reward arriving early. Keep groups small, dress smart-casual, and respect the hushed, grown-up atmosphere. All are strictly over-18s.
