Tipping in London is modest and never obligatory. Most restaurants add a 12.5 percent service charge to the bill, which counts as the tip, so check before adding more. You do not tip in pubs, cafes or fast food, and for taxis you simply round up.
Restaurants
Look for 'service charge' on the bill, usually 12.5 percent. If it is included, you need not add anything; if it is not, 10 to 12.5 percent is generous. You can ask for the service charge to be removed if the service was poor.
Pubs and bars
You do not tip when you order at the bar, which is how most London pubs work. If you want to, you can offer to buy the bartender a drink.
Taxis and rides
Round up to the nearest pound or so for black cabs; it is appreciated but not expected. App-based fares already include everything.
Hotels, cafes and tours
A pound or two for hotel porters or housekeeping is kind. Tipping in cafes is not expected. For walking tours, a few pounds per person for a good guide is normal. See our first-time tips.
