The golden rule for London is layers, comfortable walking shoes and something waterproof, whatever the season. The weather is changeable and you will walk a lot, so dress for sudden showers and pack a small umbrella or a packable rain jacket year-round.
Spring and autumn
Mild but unpredictable. Light layers, a jumper and a waterproof jacket cover most days. See what is on in our spring and autumn guides.
Summer
Usually warm rather than hot. Light clothing, but bring a layer for evenings and the odd rainy day. Most places are not heavily air-conditioned.
Winter
Cold and damp rather than snowy. A warm coat, scarf, gloves and waterproof footwear. Indoor attractions and the festive season make it a lovely time to visit, see Christmas in London.
Footwear and practical bits
Comfortable, broken-in shoes are the single most important item, you will walk miles. A crossbody bag that zips, a refillable water bottle and a portable charger round it off.
