Escape rooms lock your team into a themed space and give you 60 minutes to solve a chain of puzzles, find hidden clues and escape. London has one of the densest concentrations of them in the world, spanning beginner-friendly adventures to fiendishly hard, story-rich productions. They are ideal for groups of three to six, from families to office teams.

How escape rooms work

You are briefed on a scenario, the door closes, and the clock starts. Progress comes from searching the room, spotting patterns, and combining clues to crack locks and codes. A games master watches on camera and can drop hints if you stall. Win or lose, you get a team photo at the end and, usually, a strong urge to book another.

Where to play in London

Long-running operators such as clueQuest near King's Cross, AIM Escape near Liverpool Street and HintHunt in Bloomsbury are reliable starting points, and newer high-production venues have raised the bar on theming. Most cluster around the central and City fringes, easy to combine with a meal afterwards.

Choosing the right room

Rooms are rated by difficulty and by theme, from heist and horror to detective mysteries. First-timers should pick a beginner or intermediate room; horror fans should check whether actors are involved. Smaller teams get more hands-on with the puzzles, while larger groups should book a room rated for higher numbers.

Good to know

Book ahead, arrive 15 minutes early, and check minimum ages for younger players. As an all-weather, all-year activity it is a great rainy-day or evening option, alongside our guides to rage rooms and indoor activities.
