Hop-on hop-off bus tours are one of the easiest ways for first-time visitors to get their bearings in London, looping past the major landmarks on open-top double-deckers with live or recorded commentary. A single ticket lets you get on and off all day. Here is how they work and whether they are worth it.
How they work
You buy a ticket valid for 24, 48 or 72 hours and ride the looping routes as much as you like, hopping off at any stop to explore and catching a later bus to continue. Most include a river cruise and walking tours in the price.
The main operators and routes
Two or three big operators run similar routes covering the headline sights, from the Tower and St Paul's to Westminster, the West End and Kensington. Buses run frequently through the day, less so in winter.
Are they worth it?
