Battersea Park is one of south London's finest green spaces, 200 acres of Victorian parkland laid out on the river opposite Chelsea. Opened in 1858 on former marshland, it blends formal gardens, a boating lake and sweeping riverside walks with a buddhist Peace Pagoda that has become one of its signatures.

Why visit

It has variety few parks match: a tranquil lake, sub-tropical gardens, the riverside promenade with views across to Chelsea, and the striking white Peace Pagoda. The reopening of nearby Battersea Power Station has made it easier than ever to combine with a day out.

What to see and do

Highlights include the boating lake, the Pump House Gallery, a small children's zoo, sports facilities and the riverside walk. The gardens are at their best in spring and early summer.

Visiting tips

The park is free and open daily. Battersea Power Station station on the Northern line is the easiest approach, or cross the river on foot from Chelsea. See more in our best parks and gardens guide.
