Shisha bars (also called hookah lounges) serve flavoured tobacco smoked through a water pipe, usually alongside mezze, teas and soft drinks, in a relaxed lounge setting. Because of UK smoking laws, shisha is served in outdoor or covered terrace areas, so most venues have heated garden spaces.
What to expect
You order a pipe by flavour, shared between the table, and pay per pipe, often with a minimum spend in the evening. Many lounges serve food and run late, with a sociable, unhurried atmosphere. Most are alcohol-free, reflecting the communities they serve, though some licensed venues exist.
Where to find them
The densest clusters are along the Edgware Road in the West End and in parts of east and north London. These areas also have excellent Middle Eastern restaurants, making for an easy combined evening.
