You cannot swim in the Thames, but several proper beaches are within easy reach of London by train, making a seaside day trip a realistic plan even without a car. The closest sandy and shingle shores are around 60 to 90 minutes away, with direct services from the main London terminals. Here are the best, and how to get to them.
Brighton: the classic
Around an hour from Victoria or London Bridge, Brighton pairs a pebble beach and pier with a buzzing city of independent shops and food. It is the default London seaside trip; see our Brighton day trip guide for a full plan.
Sandy beaches by train
For actual sand, head to the wide beaches of the Kent and Essex coast, such as Camber Sands, Broadstairs and Margate, the last now a culture destination in its own right with the Turner Contemporary gallery. Most are reachable in around 90 minutes by direct train.
Planning a beach day
Buy train tickets in advance for the best fares, check the tide times for sandy beaches, and travel early on hot summer weekends when trains and beaches fill up. Pack layers; the English coast is breezy even in summer.
Good to know
A beach day is one of the best warm-weather escapes from the city. For more out-of-town ideas see our day trips from London guide and plan rail journeys with getting around London.
